Hacks for Prince of Persia 1 (Mac version)

Here are some hacks for the Mac version of POP1 (saving/potion level/etc) - by Emma Kane.
Prince of Persia 1.0 on OS X
There are two ways to run PoP on OSX - one is to use Basilisk II, which will run in colour, the other is to use Minivmac - which has sound and is more stable, but uses a mac plus rom only so everything is in black and white.
Prince of Persia is a superb game. Its a lot like tombraider in terms of controls, it was well ahead of its time (1992), and is very playable today.
However, it was commercial software and as such is copy protected. In order to progress through the game you have to go to a room and pick one of 24 potions (a-z) to drink. Pick the wrong one and you're dead. The code to pick the right one comes up on the screen and you need the manual to figure out the fight potion. With me so far? So you need a copy of the manual to play much of the game. Or you need this image.

Or you need a copy of Resedit and the ability to use it to hack into your copy of POP as follows:
(the first one definitely works) The Potion Level never appears
patch for 1.0
CODE 2, offset 1F70
change 660A
to 600A
The Potion Level is passed over
patch for 1.0
1. delete existing Potion Level (level 12? 15?)
2. copy LEVL 1 to clipboard
3. change the ID and name of the existing LEVL 1 to that of Potion Level
4. paste back in LEVL 1
Get unlimited chances to find the right potion patch for 1.0
CODE 3, offset 55A6
change 5240
to 7000
allow editing of saved files
patch
CODE 2, offset 15AC
change 663A
to 4E71
The save file is in the following format, two bytes each:
1. minutes left
2. fraction of a minute out of $2D0 (max is $2CF)
3. level
â—¦ $F is potion level
â—¦ $E is last level or princess level
â—¦ $C and $D are level 12 part 1 and part 2 Jaffer level
â—¦ $1-$B is level 1 to 11
â—¦ $0 is the demo level
4. potions
5. unknown
6. prizes (people killed, items obtained, big potions etc.)
7. how many times prince died
8. checksum (= $1B39 - min*$B - frac - level*$11 - potions*$25 - unknown*$C1 - prize*$17 - died*$D)
(You can also check the source to see how to emulate PoP1 macintosh version to run either under Basilisk II or under Minivmac on a Mac OSX) - Source: http://www.iknowthe.net/classicmac)

Q) Oids - (Couldn't get to work)
R) Scruffy - (wanted to change to B&W)
* Good Luck and let me know if you find any other games that work with the package. Stuffit expander is in one of the folders.

Regarding PopMap: You have to double click on popmap and then go to file-open and navigate to the pop1 folder where you will find the prince icon. Click on open and it will bring up a list of levels in the game to chose from where you can then edit the level. I guess you should make a copy of the game first so you can preserve the original levels. And PopMap works fine: when you double click on popmac it will look like it disappears, but in reality what happens is the File/Edit etc.. menu items at the top change to be used with the popmap program and that is when you go to file open. and select the pop icon. It does this for many mac applications, I think that is just the way that system 8 works, but I assure you it is there. The same thing happens when you double click on stuffit expander, everything disappears and you have to go to file/ expand.

Jordan Mechner (born June 4, 1964)[3] is an American video game designer, author, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is best known for designing and programming the BroderbundApple II games Karateka and Prince of Persia in the 1980s, the latter of which grew into a multi-platform franchise.

Early life[edit]

Mechner was born in New York City, into a family of European Jewish immigrants. His father is psychologist Francis Mechner,[4][5] and his mother was a programmer.[6] He attended Yale University in the 1980s.[7][8][9]

Career[edit]

While at Yale, Mechner wrote several Apple II games that he submitted for publication, but which were rejected. Asteroid Blaster, an Asteroids clone, was submitted to Hayden Software and abstract arcade game Deathbounce to Broderbund. He then spent two years at Yale writing his first published game, Karateka (1984), which went to number one on the Billboard software chart.

His second game, Prince of Persia, was released in 1989 after more than three years of work. He wrote both games in 6502 assembly language for the Apple II, though that system was in decline through the late 1980s and little new software was released by 1989. Initially, Prince of Persia sold poorly; however, as it was ported to other systems, sales increased. Eventually, it was adapted for nearly every computer and console platform.

Following the completion of Prince of Persia, Mechner took several years off from the gaming industry, during which he attended film school, wrote an unproduced screenplay, and traveled Europe for two years.[10]

Mechner designed and directed the first sequel, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame,[citation needed] released in 1993. By then, he was focused on game design and story mechanics and was no longer programming.

Mechner founded independent developer Smoking Car Productions in 1993, where he led the production of the CD-ROM adventure game The Last Express.[10] Smoking Car grew to sixty people,[11] a huge game development team for the mid-1990s, and the game took longer to finish than anticipated. When finally released in 1997, it was positively reviewed but sold poorly. The Last Express was re-released in 2012 by French publisher DotEmu for mobile and other platforms.

In 2017, Mechner won the Honorific Award at the Fun & Serious Game Festival, which takes place in the Spanish city of Bilbao.[12]

Mechner's first four games were all published by Broderbund.

Prince of Persia revival[edit]

In 2001, Mechner worked with Ubisoft to reboot Prince of Persia. Developed at Ubisoft Montreal with Mechner as game designer, writer and creative consultant, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released in 2003. It received 12 nominations and 8 awards at the Interactive Achievement Awards (D.I.C.E.).[13]Ubisoft has since published four more Prince of Persia sequels and several spinoffs.

Mechner became one of the few video game creators to adapt his own creation as a feature film with Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Mike Newell, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina. Disney released Prince of Persia movie on May 28, 2010. Mechner wrote the first drafts of the screenplay and is an executive producer of the film.

Writing and directing[edit]

Jordan Mechner at WonderCon 2010

In 2003, Mechner wrote and directed the documentary film, Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story. It won the 2003 IDA award for Best Short Documentary, was short-listed for an Academy Award nomination, and received its broadcast premiere on PBS Independent Lens in 2005.[14]

Mechner collaborated with a team on the 2008 Prince of Persia graphic novel. Mechner's completely original graphic novel Templar was published in July 2013.[15][16]Templar became a New York Times best-selling book and was nominated for an Eisner award.[17] Mechner also wrote the graphic novel, Prince of Persia: Before the Sandstorm, to tie in with the release of the film in 2010.

Mechner has written a screenplay for a film adaptation of Michael Turner's Fathom for Fox Studios with actress Megan Fox.[18]

Mechner self-published two volumes of his game development journals from the 1980s, one describing the making of Karateka and the other on Prince of Persia.[19] Mechner was able to recover the source code of the Prince of Persia game from recently found 23-year-old 3.5″ Apple ProDOS floppy disks[20] and posted it online.[21]
