In preview reviews, I’ve written about Mac uninstaller programs called AppCleaner and AppZapper. Translating app for mac. Both those apps (AppZapper is shareware while AppCleaner is freeware), do almost the identical job. When you want to delete an application, they scour your hard drive searching for any other files that include in their name, the name of the program.

This is a rather handy way of getting rid of all the “stuff” that goes along with an application, such as its preference files and caches. This is “stuff” which would otherwise stay on your computer after you deleted the application, never to be used again, but still taking up space.
I’ve been using AppCleaner for months, and have been happy with it. But now I think I’ve found something even better, another shareware program called CleanApp.
Best Free Mac Cleaner App
CleanApp is shareware, but a license only costs $10.00, and from what I’ve already seen, that ten bucks is well worth the price of admission.
First, CleanApp does the same kind of things as do the other application removal applications. It goes through your hard drive, scans for similarly-named items, and offers to delete them.
If that’s all it did, I’d say stick with AppCleaner. It has, in all honesty, a faster, more compact interface, and is free. But that’s not where CleanApp ends. In fact, that’s only the beginning for CleanApp.
In addition to offering to delete a program, CleanApp also offers to archive it. What’s this mean? Well, an application is more than just the application bundle. It’s your preferences, any associated clipart libraries. Just look in a Microsoft Office folder sometime. You’ll see shared applications, clipart, libraries… a whole bunch of stuff. If you tried to “archive” Microsoft Office for yourself by simply saving Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, you’d be sorely disappointed when you realized you didn’t really get “everything” that Office includes.
Everyone will find a series they like.
And honestly, CleanApp might not get it all either. At first. Because if a file isn’t named similarly to your main application, it won’t be recognized as “belonging” to it.

But CleanApp also offers a logging service. This is really cool. To best take advantage of CleanApp’s logging service, you’ll want to install it before you install any other applications. Because once the logging service is up and running, it will keep track of every single move all your applications make. It will notice where the preferences are stored; it will notice where files are placed during installation; it catches it all. So then, when it comes time to archive a program (because you’re going to switch computers, for instance), now CleanApp will catch all of it. It will store all those disparate files in a logically-arranged folder hierarchy, and then when you’ve moved to the new computer, just install CleanApp and it can replace your archived file, putting back all those little pieces where they belong, so your new location will have your old application, running just as you’d expect.
Of course, using the CleanApp logging service is also the best way to ensure that when you delete an item you get everything as well.

CleanApp also offers searching powered by Spotlight. This searching enables you to look at everything on your computer, from applications to Widgets to Plugins and extensions. You’ll be able to tell at a glance which of that stuff has only been used once or twice, so you can better determine whether it’s worth it to take up the hard drive space the item demands.
Do you keep your applications somewhere besides the standard Applications folder? This can be a problem, but not for CleanApp. CleanApp allows you to set new paths, so if you have an external hard drive where you keep all your music or graphics applications, just tell CleanApp and the next time you search, that path will be included.
Clean App For Mac
As I mentioned earlier, at its most very basic, CleanApp is just like AppZapper or AppCleaner. But as you delve deeper into CleanApp’s capabilities, I think you’ll find – as I did – that it has a whole lot more to offer. CleanApp is fully compatible with OSX Leopard, as well as Tiger (10.4). If you’d like to try it out, download a copy for yourself. The demo version is fully operational, but limits the user to deleting 10 items before requiring the $10.00 shareware purchase.

Delete applications completely
Any app you install and run in OS X creates a large number of associated files in your system - hidden in places you wouldn’t expect them to be. Therefore, free hard drive space will shrink continuously - even if you delete the software after testing and especially if you are trying out lots of applications. CleanApp brings light into the darkness and helps you to tidy up your system.
The program relies on sophisticated methods for analyzing files and applications. There is even a background service monitoring all file activity - this way, no application can hide anything from you. Furthermore, CleanCommunity significantly enhances the app's ability to find unnecessary data eating up space on your hard drive. By using giant database with uninstallation information about virtually thousands of applications, tracing down leftover files becomes even more reliable
System Maintenance
OS X runs maintenance scripts at predefined intervals, removing for example temporary files that haven't been used in a long time. If you use your computer heavily, these intervals might be too long. The tool allows you to run maintenance scripts manually and to speed up your system this way. The software is also able to scan and repair your file system or rebuild the Spotlight index.
More tools and tricks
The tool offers several further tools which come in pretty handy to know what’s going on on your hard drive and how to get rid of unused files. Search and delete space hogging control panes, fonts, widgets, plugins, drivers or language packs. The app also scans for empty folders, orphaned files, file duplicates or ancient iOS backups. Clean App is the right answer to the question how to avoid purchasing a new hard drive.
Note: The demo version is limited to deleting 10 applications and 10 duplicate files. Requires 64-bit processor. This application has been discontinued.
